Your next buyer isn't typing "custom home builder near me" into Google. They're asking an AI, and if your site wasn't built to answer, you're already out of the conversation.

I get asked constantly what AEO even means, and why a beautiful website suddenly isn't enough. The short answer: it never was just about the homepage. It's about what's underneath it.

This is the guide I wish every builder had before choosing a platform.

First, the dictionary nobody gave you

Let's start where most people actually are, confused by the acronyms, not the concept.

SEO, Search Engine Optimization. Building your site so Google can find it, understand it, and rank it high enough that a person clicks the link. This discipline has been around since the early 2000s. It never left.

AEO, Answer Engine Optimization. The next layer up. Instead of optimizing for a click, you're optimizing to become the answer itself, the featured snippet, the voice assistant reply, the box at the top of the results before any links even show.

GEO, Generative Engine Optimization. The newest layer, and the one most builders haven't heard of. This is about earning a citation inside an AI-generated response. When Claude, ChatGPT, or Google Gemini gets asked "who's a great custom home builder in Denver" and writes an actual answer, GEO is what determines whether your name shows up in it.

Here's what matters more than the definitions. These aren't three systems competing for your budget. They're layers stacked on the same foundation. AEO and GEO overlap constantly in practice, and both depend on the SEO fundamentals that have mattered for twenty years, clean structure, real authority, content that actually answers a question a buyer would ask. You don't swap one for the next. You build on what's already there.

Your website platform is a foundation, not a finish

You wouldn't judge a house by its paint color. You'd want to know what's behind the walls, the framing, the electrical, the plumbing that never gets photographed but decides whether the house holds up in year ten.

Your website works the same way, and most builders never get told this.

The homepage is the finish. It's what a visitor sees, what gets screenshotted, what gets shown off in a proposal. It matters, and I'd never tell you otherwise, it's the reason people hire Kroma in the first place.

But the platform underneath the homepage, the code, the hosting, whether your site can even be read cleanly by a machine, that's the foundation. It's invisible right up until it's the reason your beautiful site never shows up anywhere an AI or a search engine is actually looking.

Some platforms are built purely for dragging and dropping a pretty layout, with almost no access to what's happening underneath. Others give you room to control the structure and the technical layer that answer engines actually read. The difference doesn't show up on a screenshot. It shows up in whether you get found at all.

The plumbing nobody sees

A few things that live under the hood and quietly decide whether an AI or search engine trusts your site enough to cite it:

  • Schema markup. Think of it as labeling every room in the house for someone who's never walked through it. Schema tells a machine "this is a service," "this is a review," "this is a location," instead of making it guess. Without it, an AI reads your site like a stranger reading blueprints with no legend.

  • Clean, fast code. A site can look identical on the surface and load twice as slow underneath, purely because of how it was built. Slow, bloated code doesn't just frustrate a visitor, it tells crawlers your site is harder to process, so they process less of it.

  • Actual readable structure. Some platforms render content in ways that are gorgeous to a human eye and nearly invisible to a crawler. If a machine can't parse your page, it can't cite your page. Full stop.

None of this is exotic. It's the same standard you'd hold a contractor to on a job site, do the work you can't see as well as the work you can.

Robots.txt has a new sibling: llms.txt

Most people have at least heard of robots.txt, the small file that's told search engines where they're allowed to crawl since the 1990s. It's the bouncer at the door.

Fewer people have heard of llms.txt, which is exactly why it's worth knowing about now instead of in two years. It's a newer file, proposed in 2024, that sits at the root of your site and gives AI models a clean map of what your business actually does and where your most important content lives, without making the AI wade through navigation menus and script clutter to figure it out.

I'll be straight with you here, because I'd rather earn your trust than sell you a silver bullet. llms.txt is still new. No major AI platform has confirmed exactly how much weight it carries, and adoption is still catching up. But it costs almost nothing to set up, and there's no version of this where having a clean, honest map of your own site works against you. Treat it as smart hygiene, not a magic switch.

This didn't replace SEO. It stacked on top of it.

Nothing you've heard about SEO for the last decade stopped being true. Authority still matters. Real content still matters. A site that actually answers the questions your buyers are asking still matters more than any trick.

What changed is the destination. Ranking first on a results page used to be the finish line. Now it moved again, because a growing share of your buyers, investors, and partners are getting their first answer from Claude, from ChatGPT, from Google Gemini, before they ever land on a results page at all.

You're not choosing between SEO, AEO, and GEO. You're building all three on the same foundation, at the same time, because your next serious buyer might not click a single link before they've already formed an opinion of you.

What this actually means for you

You already hold your subcontractors to a standard most buyers will never see, the framing, the wiring, the work behind the drywall. Your website deserves the same standard. Built right underneath, not just dressed up on top.

I build both. The finish your buyers screenshot, and the schema, structure, and technical groundwork that let Claude, ChatGPT, and Google Gemini actually find, understand, and recommend you. I've built this exact stack for developers and custom builders whose sites needed to carry real weight, not just look good in a pitch deck.

If you want a plain-English read on whether your current site can even be found by the tools your buyers are already using, that's a short conversation, not a sales pitch.
